Trilobites
Order Asaphida, Suborder Asaphina, Superfamily Trinucleioidea,
Family Trinucleidae
Geologic Age: Ordovician
Trilobite is 24 mm long
Liberty Hall Shale, Lusters Gate, New Blacksburg, Virginia
Remark: Note the cephalic pits (fenestrae) through which the trilobite
filtered detritus from the seafloor. The trilobite likely made a living
by hovering near the seafloor using its legs to kick up particulates
to pass through the cephalic ring.
