Bellacartwrightia whiteleyi Trilobite

Trilobites Order Phacopida
Geologic Age: Middle Devonian
Trilobite is 24 mm long
Wanakah Member, Hamilton Group, Gennesee County, New York
Remarks: Note the mottled exoskeleton. One hypothesis put forth by researchers is that the darker areas are preserved melanophores that could expand an contract, allowing the trilobite to change color. that is, adaptive camouflage. Also note the tubercles on the exoskeleton, and on the pygidial spines particularly.
