Trilobites
Order Phacopida, Suborder Cheirurina, Superfamily Cheiruroidea,
Family Cheiruridae
Geologic Age: Devonian
Trilobite is 75 mm long
Mrakib, Morocco
Remarks: Previously called Cyrtometopus, this trilobite should not
be confused with other common species of the genera. This trilobite has
pronounced and sharp
pleural
and pygidial
spines, and
distinctive
cephalic
projections.
Until recently,
this trilobite was called Cyrtometopus. Richard Fortey classified it
as a type of Crtotalocephalus. Like snow shoes, the abundent spines may
have facilitated it in staying at the surface of a soft seafloor.
